The Game Developers Conference, an annual event, is set to take place in March, with Nintendo developers participating prominently. The 2024 conference, hosted in San Francisco from March 18th to March 22nd, will feature Nintendo’s Kyoto team offering insights into two of their latest projects: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
During the session titled “Tunes of the Kingdom: Evolving Physics and Sounds for ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’,” attendees will hear from the game’s Technical Director Takuhiro Dohta, Lead Physics Programmer Takahiro Takayama, and Lead Sound Engineer Junya Osada. They will delve into the development of the much-anticipated sequel, which has garnered seven nominations at the 2024 Game Developers Choice Awards, including Best Audio. The presentation will cover the integration of advanced physics-based gameplay and innovative sound design in the expanded Hyrule, alongside discussions on Link’s enhanced capabilities and the auditory landscape of the game.
Another highlight of the conference is the talk titled “2D and Tomorrow: How the Developers of ‘Super Mario Bros. Wonder’ Find New Joy in Creating Classic Side-Scrolling Adventures.” Post the recent release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, developers Takashi Tezuka and Shiro Mouri will elaborate on the evolution of traditional side-scrolling Mario gameplay, introducing revolutionary ‘Wonder’ effects that alter the game’s environment in novel ways. The session will explore the game’s design process, enhancements in player choice, and the introduction of a new online dimension, all of which build on Mario’s storied legacy while charting fresh territory for fans.
These presentations promise to offer GDC attendees and the broader gaming community valuable insights into the creative processes behind these Nintendo titles, showcasing how established franchises are being reimagined for contemporary audiences.
